Who Is At-Fault For A T-Bone Accident?

CarAccident5

While many of those who get behind the wheel of a car are focused on safety and careful driving, there is, unfortunately, a more than good chance that someone else on the road is not. This lack of care reveals itself in the alarming number of car crashes that occur in Florida every year. T-bone accidents in particular almost never occur unless at least one driver was exhibiting extreme negligence or recklessness prior to the crash. If you were involved in this kind of collision and have questions about liability, please call our experienced Fort Lauderdale auto accident attorneys to learn more.

The Typical T-Bone Accident

T-bone accidents are often officially referred to as side-impact collisions, as they occur when the front end of one vehicle strikes the side of another, making a T-shape upon impact. These kinds of collisions occur most often at intersections, where there is less protection for the parties involved. Unfortunately, this means that the injuries sustained in t-bone accidents tend to be severe, especially when the original collision carries a vehicle into oncoming traffic or results in another collision with a guardrail or traffic light. Typical injuries include:

  • Back injuries, like herniated discs, compression fractures, and pinched nerves;
  • Neck injuries, including whiplash and ligament strain;
  • Serious knee injuries, including ACL and MCL tears;
  • Chest trauma, including broken ribs or damage to the lungs or heart;
  • Shoulder injuries, including broken bones, ligament tears, rotator cuff injuries, and dislocations;
  • Head injuries, including concussions, bleeding in the brain, and hearing or vision damage; and
  • Lacerations to the face, neck, chest, or arms.

These kinds of injuries are not only painful, but also expensive to treat. Please call our office to learn more about recovering compensation for your own crash-related injuries.

T-Bone Accident Causes

T-bone accidents, like any other type of vehicle-related collision, occur for a variety of reasons, but are most often the result of a driver’s failure to stop at a red light (or stop sign) at an intersection. This in turn, also has a number of causes, but can usually be attributed to:

  • Misjudging the speed of oncoming traffic;
  • Misjudging the gap in traffic;
  • Attempting to speed through an intersection;
  • Entering an intersection with an obstructed view;
  • Failing to yield the right-of-way;
  • Driver distraction;
  • Speeding; or
  • Driving while intoxicated.

All of these examples involve some degree of negligence, which means that injured parties who can provide proof of this type of careless behavior, could be entitled to damages for their injuries. Necessary evidence could include everything from photographs from the scene of the accident and eyewitness testimony to video recordings of the crash and expert testimony.
