Which Cars Are Most Likely to Get Caught Speeding?

SpeedingCar

Can you tell which car is about to drive at an excessive speed when the car is stationary in a parking space and its driver is nowhere in sight?  Car insurance companies don’t think you can.  The belief that what model of car you drive affects your insurance premiums has more basis in hype than in reality.  Speeding tickets, no matter what model of car you were driving when you got them, make a difference, too, even if the driver does not cause an accident.  More importantly, the speed that the vehicles are traveling has a major effect on the severity of the accident, even more than the angle of collision.  If the driver that hit you was speeding, this weighs in your favor in terms of the compensation you can claim in an insurance payout or, if necessary, in a personal injury lawsuit.  If you suffered injuries in a car accident where excessive speed was a factor, contact a Fort Lauderdale auto accident attorney.

Bad News for the Drivers of Affordable Sports Cars

Insurify published a list of the models of cars that get the greatest number of speeding tickets per driver nationwide.  In 2023, the most recent year for which data are available, most of the cars in the top ten are Asian and European sports cars with a more affordable price point than one would expect for a sports car.  The top three models for speeding tickets were the Subaru BRZ, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and the Volkswagen GTI.  If anything, this shows that it is easier to get away with showing off if you are rich; if the rest of us dare to dream, police radar will shut down our aspirations quickly.  The two models that did not fit this pattern were Chevrolet mid-sized sedans, namely the Chevrolet Cruze Limited and the Chevrolet Malibu Limited, which ranked fourth and ninth, respectively.

The cars with speeding ticket rates lower than the national average were the ones with speeding assist technology.  Some newer models of cars will alert drivers if they exceed the speeding limit by more than a few miles per hour.  These cars also brake if you get too close to an obstacle, but this feature is less effective if you are driving at more than 62 miles per hour.

Speed Matters in Car Accident Claims

Reputation for speeding should not be a factor in your choice of vehicle to purchase, but it makes a big difference in collisions.  The higher the speed, the greater the severity of injuries that result, even for the occupants of the vehicle that was not speeding.  Furthermore, the faster the car is going, the less time you have to avoid a collision if another car near you makes an unexpected move.
