Tips for Driving Safely in Florida Storms

HurricaneDriving

Besides being known for its beautiful beaches, wildlife, and tourist attractions, Florida is also notorious for its yearly autumn storms. These weather conditions can make driving in Florida a nerve-wracking experience, with the rainy season in particular accompanied by heavy rains and strong winds. Having an understanding of our state’s unique weather patterns and the techniques that can help drivers maintain vehicle control, even in stormy weather, can go a long way towards preventing accidents.

Florida’s Storm Patterns

Florida’s tropical climate poses a challenge to drivers, especially during storm season. Unfortunately, this issue is further complicated by the fact that there are a variety of types of storms in Florida, all of which impact road conditions differently. Thunderstorms, for instance, are more common in the summer months, but can extend through September and are typically accompanied by heavy rains, strong winds, and lightning, which make it dangerous to drive. Hurricanes, however, which peak between the middle of August and late October when the waters off the coast are warmest, pose an even more serious threat, as they bring gale strength winds, storm surges, and flooding.

Storms Affect Road Conditions

 Florida storms, with their heavy rain and winds can make it nearly impossible to drive, especially in low-lying areas, where the risk of flooding is high. Roads can become impassable and vehicles are much more likely to hydroplane. Strong winds can also blow dangerous debris onto the roadways, striking or creating obstacles for vehicles. The wind conditions for hurricanes are often so strong that they can actually move the vehicles themselves. Reduced visibility is another very real concern during Florida’s storms, with heavy rain and wind-driven moisture making it impossible to see other vehicles or the road ahead. Storm surges can even lead to coastal roads being inundated with seawater, resulting in damage that lasts for weeks. By understanding these risks, Florida drivers can anticipate the hazards of driving in the late summer and autumn in our state.

Techniques for Safe Driving in Inclement Weather

If possible, Florida drivers should do whatever they can to stay off the road when a storm is predicted. When this isn’t possible, however, drivers can implement a few techniques to help reduce their chances of being involved in a crash, such as:

  • Using low-beam headlights and wipers;
  • Maintaining a safe distance from other cars, with safety experts recommending at least a six second gap between oneself and other vehicles;
  • Avoiding hydroplaning by slowing down, avoiding sudden maneuvers, traveling in the tracks of the vehicles ahead, and conducting regular tire maintenance;
  • Keeping both hands on the steering wheel and reducing speed to maintain control in strong winds;
  • Preparing to make steering corrections when moving from wind-protected areas, like bridges and overpasses, to open spaces;
  • Avoiding flooded areas; and
  • Pulling over in a safe place to wait for conditions to improve.

Drivers who follow these guidelines can improve their chances of getting through a Florida storm safely.
