The Most Dangerous Intersections in South Florida

IntersectionAccident

Driving in South Florida is not for the faint of heart.  I-95 and downtown Miami have always been chaos, but decades ago, once you got out of the busiest areas, you could go for a peaceful drive, with nothing but sawgrass as far as the eye could see.  Today, South Florida traffic is a mess everywhere you go, but some areas are still more dangerous than others.  A certain stretch of Palm Beach County stands out for its high rate of pedestrian fatalities because of its poor lighting.  Meanwhile, almost all of the densely populated areas of Miami-Dade County see pedestrians and bicycles weaving in and out of bumper-to-bumper traffic day and night.  The last time anyone drove at or below the speed limit in South Florida was sometime in the previous century.  Therefore, the most dangerous intersections in South Florida are among the most dangerous in the United States.  If you have been injured in a car accident at one of South Florida’s notoriously dangerous intersections, contact a Fort Lauderdale auto accident attorney.

Which Broward County Intersections Have Witnessed the Most Collisions?

Broward County has a reputation for being the least interesting part of South Florida.  It doesn’t have Miami’s celebrity culture and adventures on the wrong side of the law, nor does it have Palm Beach County’s old money.  With its grid pattern streets and its McMansions, it does not look like a place to go looking for danger, but if you drive in Broward County, danger has a way of finding you.

These are some of the most dangerous intersections in Broward County:

  • Dixie Highway and Commercial Boulevard – In an industrial area, the traffic is sparse enough that people have room to speed.  When pedestrians are present, no one is paying attention to them.
  • Pines Boulevard and Flamingo Road – Almost everyone who approaches the Pembroke Lakes Mall from the south or west passes through this frightening intersection.  It is even more crowded during the holiday season, but the Pembroke Lakes Mall Christmas shopping experience is unbeatable.
  • A1A and South Las Olas Boulevard – This is the touristic part of Fort Lauderdale Beach.  Drunk drivers and drunk tourists who do not know where they are going are a deadly combination.
  • State Road 7 and Sheridan Street – This is one of the intersections where the chaos of I-95 spills over into city streets with traffic lights.  This intersection was bad enough in the 1990s, when the biggest attractions there were the movie theater and the Barnes and Noble, and it is even worse now.

Most car accidents are the fault of one or more of the drivers involved, but in some cases, the city or county can also be liable if the area is known to contain preventable hazards such as road designs with poor visibility.
