Teenage Boy In Critical Condition After Accident
A 15-year-old boy is recovering after being hit by a car one recent evening. Though he is still in critical condition, his condition is stable as he receives care in a local hospital. The boy was struck by a vehicle on the William Lehman Causeway, but fortunately for everyone involved the driver stayed at the accident scene with the victim – an act certain to have made a difference in the outcome of the story.
Bicycle/Motor Vehicle Accident Statistics
Bicycle/motor vehicle accidents claim the lives of hundreds of people each year; according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 700 bicyclists died during 2014 as a result of accidents involving motor vehicles. Additionally, tens of thousands of bicyclists are injured in accidents each year, and that is just the injuries that are reported. It is estimated that the number of bicyclist injuries that are reported to police are just a small fraction, maybe even just ten percent, of those who have actually been injured. Nearly thirty percent of all bicyclist injuries do occur as a result of bicycle/motor vehicle accidents – being struck by a car.
Looking At Florida
Florida is at the top of the list for many things, some of them very good things. However, Florida is also at the top of a bad list too – bicyclist deaths. In one year, 120 people lost their lives riding their bikes in Florida. The list of possible reasons for these high rates makes sense – Florida’s roadways are wide and motorists drive fast, bicyclists are out all through the year because of the good weather, bicyclists are often not wearing enough or the proper safety equipment, and the general population may not be educated enough about bicycle safety. In many cases, a bicycle/motor vehicle accident is determined to be the fault of the motor vehicle driver instead of the bicyclist, which brings up the question of whether Florida drivers might not be the safest drivers on our country’s roads. Another question is whether there is something about Florida drivers that has led the state to the top of the list of bicyclist deaths and injuries due to accidents. Though it may be easy to blame the high accident rates on elderly drivers, as Florida certainly has its share, the statistics actually show that the opposite is true; younger drivers are more likely to be behind the wheel in bicycle/motor vehicle accidents than older drivers. Looking at the statistics, the numbers of drivers involved in accidents with bicycles decreases after about age 55 and continues to fall with each subsequent age group.
