Sunrise Homeowner Safe After Home Damaged By SUV
A Sunrise homeowner escaped injury recently when the 65-year-old driver of an SUV lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the woman’s home. According to reports, the driver hit both a median and a tree before hitting the house; the homeowner was in her bedroom at the time of the accident, which is where the SUV came to a stop. The homeowner was not hurt, but the crash caused damage to the wall of the home as well as some palm trees on the property. Neighbors who witnessed the incident came to the aid of the driver, who suffered minor injuries as a result of the accident.
The Age Factor
Though according to reports, there is a history of drivers losing control of their vehicles in this particular spot, there is always a question of exactly what factors contributed to any given accident. In Florida, with its robust population of senior drivers, the question arises of whether there may be age-related issues contributing to the cause of an accident in which the driver of the vehicle is part of the senior segment of society. The National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the US Department of Health and Human Services, recognizes the issues that face drivers of advanced age and notes that a decline in one’s ability to see or hear properly can have a serious affect on driving. Problems with slowed reflexes and reaction time can also contribute to an older driver’s ability to drive safely.
Recognizing Your Limitations
There is no doubt that driving is an activity that most people want to continue doing as long as they can. It is certainly a symbol of freedom and independence and, for some older people, that loss of independence can be traumatic. However, for the safety of everyone on the roads – other drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and even, as in the case of the Sunrise home owner, people who are not even on the roads themselves – it is important to ensure that older drivers recognize their limitations and adjust their driving habits accordingly. Those of us with older relatives may find ourselves in the position of having to make tough decisions on their behalf, for their own good. Regular health assessments are absolutely necessary to keep an eye on age-related conditions that could turn a formerly good driver into an unsafe driver.
