Most Dangerous Types of Car Accidents

CarCrash

Any car accident can result in serious injuries. Even seemingly minor fender benders, for instance, could leave an injured passenger suffering from debilitating neck and back trauma. It is true, however, that certain types of accidents are known for causing particularly severe injuries. Victims of head-on collisions, for example, are much more likely to sustain serious, and even fatal, injuries. If you were injured in a collision with another vehicle and were not at fault, please contact a member of our car accident legal team to learn more about your legal options.

Head-On Collisions

Head-on car crashes tend to result in some of the most devastating injuries, including crushed and broken bones, head trauma, internal bleeding, and burns. Tragically, many injuries sustained in head-on crashes are fatal, especially if the cars involved were traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the collision. In fact, the speed at which the parties were traveling plays a critical role in the severity of this type of accident, as does the type of vehicles involved and the cause of the crash. For instance, head-on car crashes often occur at night on rural roads because one party fell asleep at the wheel. In these cases, the at-fault party is often unaware of the approaching collision until it is too late, meaning that the crash occurs at full speed, with no attempt at braking.

Because these crashes tend to involve significant impacts, occupants are especially likely to suffer chest and lower limb injuries, as well as facial and head trauma. Many of these injuries can be linked to an occupant’s coming into contact with the steering wheel, instrument panel, or dashboard.

T-Bone Accidents

Aside from head-on collisions, t-bone accidents are considered to be some of the most severe types of car accidents, as they involve one vehicle striking the relatively unprotected side of another car. Because there is no trunk or engine space like at the front and rear portions of a vehicle, those who are struck by an oncoming vehicle in a t-bone collision are much more exposed to the impact. For this reason, it is more likely that an occupant will be injured, even if an accident occurred at a low speed. T-bone accident victims thus have a higher risk of chest, shoulder, and head injuries.

Multi-Car Pile-Ups

Multi-vehicle collisions also put vehicle occupants at a high risk of injury. This is largely because victims of these types of crashes are forced to undergo not just one, but multiple impacts. It’s also much harder for a vehicle’s occupants to escape after this type of crash, as they are often boxed in or their vehicle is so crushed that they are trapped and must wait for emergency responders. It is also more likely that fires, explosions, and flying debris will play a role in these kinds of accidents, leaving victims vulnerable to burns and severe lacerations, which can prove deadly.
