Miami, FL – UPDATE: Man Arrested in Deadly 79th St Accident

Miami, FL - UPDATE: Man Arrested in Fatal 79th St Accident

Miami, FL (September 5, 2023) – Authorities reported early Tuesday that they had detained a man in connection with a fatal multi-car crash that occurred on the 79th Street Causeway Bridge late Monday night.

Officer Michael Vega of the Miami Police Department said that four vehicles were involved in the crash.

On Tuesday, a 24-year-old Georgia man was named as the suspect in the deadly collision. The police report said that he was driving west on the causeway in a Lamborghini Urus at a “very high rate of speed” when he swerved to the left to avoid colliding with a Hyundai Elantra. The bridge has a speed restriction of 35 miles per hour.

Both cars reportedly rotated counterclockwise and drifted westward toward the top of the bridge after the man lost control and crashed into the Hyundai.

The Hyundai’s driver apparently suffered fatal injuries after being thrown from his vehicle and colliding with a streetlight pole.

Meanwhile, the Lamborghini hit two additional cars, as detailed in the report. Additional victims suffered injuries, though their current conditions are unknown.

The arresting officer noted that the suspect driver smelled of alcohol and apprehended the man. No other details were released in connection with this ongoing investigation.

We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the deceased man’s family. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their loved ones in hopes of their full recovery.
