Home Fire Injuries

homefireSeveral people in the Miami area have been the victims of fires at home in recent days. In one incident in Miami-Dade County, a victim suffered injuries as a result of an apartment fire and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment for burns on their face and chest. In a separate incident in Weston, two people – including a toddler – were injured in a natural gas grill fire and required treatment at a burn unit.

Children And Burns – The Youngest Victims

Any accident involving burn injuries is tragic, but those involving children are particularly difficult to deal with. Their tiny bodies and fragile skin are so precious and can be harmed so much worse and more quickly than older people. Statistics offered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that each and every day over three hundred children of all ages up to twenty years old are injured in burn accidents and,  sadly, two of them die as a result of their injuries.

Burns Of All Types And Causes

Burns are the most common injuries that occur at home, particularly among children. Burn injuries can range from minor to quite severe and, depending on the severity, can go away on their own or require extensive and lengthy courses of treatment and even surgery at times. While burns can be the result of a number of different causes including fires, boiling liquids, chemicals or electrical sources, or even the sun, there are just three types of burns – first, second, and third degree. First degree burns are generally minor and go away quickly on their own; they involve just the outermost layer of skin. Second degree burns are more severe and go beyond the first layer of skin into the deeper layers. They take longer to heal and require more treatment, but typically do go away without permanent damage or scarring. The next type of burn, the third degree burn, typically requires a far more extensive treatment program and can often have long-lasting effects and complications. Treatments for these types of injuries may include procedures such as skin grafts to replace irreparably damaged areas of skin. In some cases, a burn injury patient may not have enough healthy skin to graft – advances in technology and the availability of skin donors, skin graft banks, and even artificial skin grafts have made it possible to treat those with more advanced skin graft needs.
