Several drivers were very lucky on a recent Friday morning in Miami Beach when they escaped injury in a two-vehicle crash. Details regarding the accident involving a food delivery tractor trailer and an SUV are not clear, but the end result was that the tractor trailer ended up wedged between a tree and an apartment building. Fortunately not only were the two drivers unharmed, but nobody in the apartment building was injured either. What could have been a tragic start to the weekend ended up only involving damage to the vehicles – which are replaceable, unlike human lives.

This Miami Beach accident may not be the norm – it is far more common for a tractor trailer to be involved in an accident on a highway than in the middle of town. Regardless of where it happens, though, it happens more often than anyone wants to see. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, however, the trend over a ten-year span from 2002 through 2012 is that there are decreasing numbers of large trucks involved in all types of crashes:
- Trucks involved in fatal crashes decreased by 17 percent
- Trucks involved in injury crashes decreased by 18 percent
- Trucks involved in property damage only crashes decreased 25 percent
It is interesting to note, however, that despite the trend of lower numbers of trucks involved in crashes over the ten year time period, in the one-year span from 2011 to 2012 rose sharply across all categories.

Due to their sheer size and weight alone, larger vehicles require more stopping distance. A tire blowout can be much more disastrous when it occurs to a tractor trailer as compared to a smaller vehicle – not just for the tractor trailer but for other vehicles in the area who could potentially be struck by shredding tires or other vehicles attempting to avoid them. Truck accidents can be the result of an overloaded or wide-load trailer that cannot maneuver properly, and tractor trailers are also prone to jackknifing and rolling over in hazardous conditions and situations. Just about anything that could cause a small vehicle to crash will have the same result for a large truck – but the potential damage is likely to be far worse.
