Driving Into The Future

According to experts, with each automobile accident, speed is often a factor in some way. Whether it prevents a driver from being able to stop in time to avoid an accident in the first place, or whether high speeds contribute to a more severe impact – and more personal injuries suffered by those involved in the crash – it is in everyone’s interest to continue looking for ways to make the roads safer by lowering the numbers of speeders on the road. One such effort is a part of the movement towards self-driving vehicles, which would likely make the roads safer not only for drivers and vehicle occupants, but also for other road users such as pedestrians and bicyclists.

The Need For Speed

Speeding – few of us can claim to not be guilty of this offense at some point in our driving careers. Whether we are exceeding the posted speed limit or just driving too fast for road conditions – taking corners too fast or not slowing down in adverse weather – it is rare to find someone who has never driven too fast and put themselves and others at risk, even if they did not have the intention of doing so. Though the statistics about speeding and its contribution to accident rates and extent and severity of accident injuries vary depending upon source, with some, as those experts advocating for self-driving vehicles, claiming speed is a factor in every accident, to sources showing it is a factor in a quarter, or a third, of all accidents, the bottom line is that speeding is a problem that does cause accidents. It is no surprise that by cutting down on incidents of speeding, accident and injury rates would decrease as well. While speed is generally a factor in every crash to some extent, however, it is rarely the only factor. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Highway Loss Data Institute, with respect to fatal accidents, other factors besides speeding include alcohol, safety belt issues, and other driver behavior. So, while autonomous vehicles may help increase safety on the roads by limiting vehicle’s speed, other factors within the vehicle occupants’ control such as wearing seat belts may not be affected.
