Common Car Accident Injuries

BackInj

Car accidents can result in a variety of injuries ranging in severity from minor scrapes and bruises to head trauma and spinal cord injuries. Generally, how severe an injury is depends on a number of different factors, including where the injured party was sitting in the vehicle at the time of the accident, the type of crash in which a person was involved, and the speed at which the vehicles were traveling prior to the collision.

Regardless of the type of injury that a person sustains, it is important for those who are involved in car accidents through no fault of their own to speak with an experienced car accident attorney who can help them seek compensation for their financial losses from the at-fault party.

Lacerations and Bruises

Of the many types of injuries that a person can sustain in an accident, lacerations and bruises are perhaps the most common. When not caused by blunt force trauma from the impact of a collision, or coming into contact with broken windows, many of these injuries can be linked to the shattering of items within a car, such as sunglasses and cell phones. For instance, it is not uncommon during a crash for a person to strike his or her head on the windshield or car window, and if wearing sunglasses, to then suffer lacerations when those sunglasses shatter.

Although bruises can often be healed through rest and regular icing, lacerations may require stitches, and if severe enough, could leave a victim with disfiguring scars or limited mobility. Many car accident victims who sustain lacerations are also at a much higher risk of infection.

Back and Spinal Cord Injuries

The types of back injuries that car accident victims can sustain are wide ranging and include everything from sprains and strains to spinal cord damage. While the former may require physical therapy and rest, the latter is often permanent and irreparable even through surgery. When this occurs, a victim could be left without sensation or mobility in some or all of his or her limbs. Time off from work, extensive rehabilitative measures, modified vehicles and homes, and assisted living care are also often necessary and can lead to hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of medical debt.

Toxic Exposure

Although most people don’t think about toxic exposure as a serious risk for those who are involved in car accidents, the reality is that accident victims whose collisions involve large commercial vehicles tasked with transporting dangerous chemicals, could suffer from respiratory problems or even chemical burns if exposed to those substances.

Chest Injuries

Chest injuries resulting from car accidents can usually be linked to the deployment of an airbag or a victim’s ejection from a vehicle, both of which can cause broken ribs or internal injuries. Organ damage and internal bleeding, in particular, pose a serious risk to accident victims who, if not treated promptly, could even lose their lives.

Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) can render car accident victims disabled or suffering from memory loss, impaired vision, or an inability to concentrate. In some cases, these injuries can also cause mood disorders, emotional distress, and even post-traumatic stress disorder.
