Bicyclist Killed In Weston Hit And Run Accident

Bike1

The family and friends of a man killed in an automobile accident while riding his bicycle are asking for help in finding out what happened – and who was driving the automobile that struck their loved one. The bicyclist was knocked off his bike in the hit and run crash and, tragically, did not survive. Details regarding the accident are sparse and the friends and family are hoping to get answers – and closure.

Stop – It’s The Law

Hit and run accidents happen frequently, despite increased awareness of the problem and efforts on the part of the legislature to increase penalties and punishments for failing to do the right thing after being involved in an accident. According to Florida law, whenever a driver is involved in an accident that results in damage to either people or property, they have an obligation to stop at the scene of the accident and perform certain tasks. The tasks depend upon the specific circumstances of the accident but, in general, require the driver, or drivers, to stop at the accident site and provide or exchange contact information. In accidents in which someone has been injured, there is also an obligation to provide appropriate assistance to the injured party. Though it seems like common sense – and just the right thing to do – many drivers leave the scene of an accident without fulfilling these legal requirements and, unfortunately, this often makes a significant difference in the outcome for the injured person.

You Can Run But You Can’t Hide

Though in some cases leaving the scene of a hit and run crash may be unintentional – perhaps the impact was so slight that the driver did not even realize they had hit something, especially in nighttime darkness, in the vast majority of hit and run accidents it is simply not plausible that the driver was oblivious to the fact that they had hit someone or something. For a variety of reasons, perhaps including a fear of what could happen to them due to their own lack of insurance or impaired state of being, drivers continue to leave accident scenes. According to statistics, the rate of hit and run crashes has remained steady over the years with nearly a quarter of all accidents involving a hit and run. For those who choose to run, if – and when – they are caught, the penalties for their crime will depend upon who or what they hit and the extent of the damage caused.
