A Fort Lauderdale apartment building was the site of a recent fire during which several people were injured, one of whom sustained injuries serious enough to require hospitalization. According to the reports, the injured parties were all treated at the scene and none had sustained injuries serious enough to be life-threatening. The fire was reported to have broken out on the 15th floor and spread to the floor above, but a cause was not yet determined.
An Overview Of The History Of Apartment Buildings And Fires
According to the National Fire Protection Association, in recent years there have been nearly 100,000 apartment structure fires each year, which is down significantly from a few high years in the early 80s during which there were nearly 150,000 apartment structure fires reported. Deaths resulting from these fires are also down significantly during that same reported time period, which started out at approximately 1000 deaths per year in the early 80s and in recent years has been between 300 to 500 deaths per year.
Fire Causation
In order to continue to decrease the number of fires in apartment buildings and residential structures in general, it is necessary to understand what is causing them to begin with. According to the United States Fire Administration, the main causes of fires in residential housing structures include cooking, which accounts for half of all fire incidents, heating, and electrical malfunctions. A handful of other causes including but not limited to smoking, carelessness, and appliances account for a small portion of fires as well.
Fire-Related Injuries
A 2016 report indicates that in one recent year there were nearly half a million burn injuries that resulted in medical treatment of some sort. Burns are not the only injuries that are sustained during a fire, but they are the most common. Additionally, however, smoke inhalation is another type of injury commonly sustained in a fire and can be quite serious. Many fire victims suffer a combination of burns of varying degrees along with smoke inhalation, and often times victims find themselves hospitalized or at burn centers recovering from their injuries long after the fire has been extinguished.
