Truck Accident Reconstruction Could Play a Pivotal Role in the Outcome of Your Case

TruckAccident

Collisions between passenger vehicles and commercial trucks are different from other types of crashes, simply in the amount of damage that they cause. Often 20 to 30 times larger and heavier than passenger vehicles, commercial trucks cause devastating vehicle damage and catastrophic injuries in collisions with smaller cars. Fortunately, accident victims can often recover compensation for these kinds of crashes if they can prove that the truck driver, trucking company, or another third party was responsible for the accident. This, however, will require an in-depth investigation, which in turn could involve an official reconstruction of the crash by a team of specialists.

Truck Accident Reconstruction

In personal injury cases, truck accident reconstructions are usually conducted by specialists who are trained in how to gather evidence at the scene of an accident and then use that information, as well as vehicle dynamics, photogrammetry, physics, and crash tests to determine the mechanics of a collision. Doing so requires an in-person visit to the scene of the crash, where the expert will assess pre- and post-impact tire and gouge marks, as well as any other physical damage. They will also need to review photos of the accident scene, look at the damage to the vehicles, and assess any video footage of the crash, all of which will better enable them to discover:

  • The exact time and location of the accident;
  • Each vehicle’s speed prior to and during the accident; and
  • Each car’s angle of impact and trajectory during the collision.

These details can then be input into a specific software program to recreate a simulation or model of the accident in question.

Determining Liability

Besides showing how an accident occurred, the simulations created by truck accident reconstruction specialists can also help determine:

  • How each driver’s actions contributed to the collision;
  • Whether human error was the cause of the crash and if so, whose error;
  • Whether road or weather conditions contributed to the crash; and
  • Whether the crash was exacerbated or caused by a mechanical error in one of the vehicles.

This information will prove critical in proving who was ultimately at fault for an accident and who should bear responsibility for the victim’s losses. Besides having official diagrams and models to reveal their findings, accident reconstruction specialists will also write up a report and may need to present those results in court to a jury.
